- A head is a consumable, not a fault. It wears out on a schedule set by how much you print, what you print on and how hard the burn is set — like a tyre. Budget for it rather than being surprised by it.
And it should be fitted by us, or by a trained engineer. Honestly said: a print head is a few microns of ceramic on a static-sensitive board. Over-tightened, mis-seated, touched with a bare hand, or fitted with the burn setting left where the worn head needed it, a new head can be finished inside its first hour — and there is no warranty anywhere to fall back on when it is. How to make a print head last
- Clean it, every few hours of printing. Dust and label adhesive on the burn line are what kill most heads, long before the ceramic wears out. A cleaning pen or isopropyl on a lint-free swab across the head, with the printer off and the head cool, takes twenty seconds and buys months.
- Use a good label, not the cheapest one. A poorly coated face stock is abrasive, and a label whose adhesive bleeds at the edges leaves gum on the head every pass. Mynds certified label stock is cut and coated for this, and it is the cheaper choice by the time you have counted a head.
- Use a ribbon matched to the job. The ribbon is what sits between the head and the label, so it decides how hard the head has to burn. Mynds brand ribbons run Mynds 20 wax, Mynds 30 resin, Mynds 40 premium resin, Mynds 50 washcare and Mynds 60 near-edge TTO — matched properly, they print at a lower darkness setting, and a lower darkness setting is a longer head life.
- Do not print darker than you need to. Turning the darkness up to fix a faint label is the commonest way people shorten a head. Nine times in ten the real answer is a cleaner head, the right ribbon or the right stock — bring us a sample and we will tell you which.
